Sam
What's your earliest memory?
Being alive!
Favourite place in the world?
Anywhere that makes me happy... I would love to visit Fiji
Which song can you listen to over and over again?
AR Rahmans’s 'Tu Hi Re' from the film Bombay amongst others... in fact the entire Bombay soundtrack!
Plus I have a terrible habit of putting songs on repeat until I get sick of them... !
Any special qualifications/achievements that you are proud of?
Over the years I have raised money for charity through various sponsored events... but a Sponsored Silence was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do... ! Me being voluntarily silent for more than a minute is almost impossible!
What was your first job?
Working as a telephone operator for a Pizza company...
'Deep pan or thin crust madam?'
What would be your dream job?
To talk for a living... hang on I'm doing that now hehe! I would actually love to host my own chat show on TV...
How did you get started in radio?
At the tender age of 17 I talked my way into presenting the Drivetime show for an RSL station, then left to get a 'proper job'. Many years I later, I went back into local radio with my own show and have now joined the fantastic team at AsianFx
Best on-air moment?
Every time I open the mic to speak! I love talking on air...and knowing that I'm entertaining people... whether they're laughing at me or with me it doesn't matter as long as someone's having fun... !
Worst on-air moment? (Embarrassing or otherwise)
When I had no music for the first 40 minutes of a show because the computer crashed and I had to talk absolute rubbish and play random CDs other presenters had left behind in the studio…including a seven minute long depressing boring song by some unknown artist... !
Describe a typical working day?
Very very busy! I love using my weird life as material for an exhilarating 3 hours of madness in the studio... !
What's your ambition?
To be successful at being happy... go figure that out!
Best advice that you've been given and why?
'To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else, is the greatest accomplishment'
And the reason this was great advice is because it coincides perfectly with another piece of great advice I was given:
'The key to failure is trying to please everybody.'
It's really important to be who you are... not who you think people want you to be...
Do you have any special hobbies and interests?
I wouldn't call them special interests, but I love reading... especially historical novels and I also enjoy painting and writing poetry
Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
A lift engineer! Haha I guess that was obvious... or Johnny Depp would do very nicely thank you... !
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a career in radio?
Be yourself... and be prepared to work very hard... if you don't want to live and breathe it... then it's not for you... !
